Botulinum toxin injected into the skin of the underarms, palms or soles blocks the nerve signal to sweat glands and reliably stops excessive sweating for six to nine months. It is one of the most satisfying treatments in medical aesthetics.
What it is
- Toxin is placed as a grid of superficial micro-injections across the affected area, blocking acetylcholine release at the sweat glands.
- Sweating elsewhere in the body is unaffected — the effect is strictly local.
Who it suits
- Primary hyperhidrosis of the underarms, palms or soles
- People whose antiperspirants no longer work or who avoid social and professional situations
- Secondary sweating from thyroid disease, medication or infection is investigated first

How the treatment is performed
- Optional Minor's iodine-starch test to map the active sweating zone.
- Topical anaesthetic or cooling, especially for palms.
- Grid of intradermal injections roughly 1–2 cm apart.
Safety
- Palm treatment requires care to avoid temporary weakness of small hand muscles; dose and depth are controlled for this.
- Full medical history including thyroid and medication review.
Before your appointment
Shave underarms 24 hours before; avoid antiperspirant on the day of treatment.
Aftercare
No sauna, hot bath or intense exercise for 24 hours; normal washing is fine.
Results and longevity
- Dryness begins at day 2–4 and is complete by day 7–14.
- Effect typically lasts 6–9 months in the underarms, slightly less on the palms.
Possible side effects and risks
- Injection-site pain and bruising.
- Compensatory sweating elsewhere is uncommon and usually mild.
- Temporary grip weakness after palm treatment in a minority of patients.

Check at 2 weeks; any untreated patch can be topped up.
Questions about this treatment
Is it dangerous to stop sweating in one area?
No. The treated area is a small fraction of the body's sweat glands and thermoregulation is unaffected.
How painful are palm injections?
Palms are more sensitive than underarms. We use cooling and topical anaesthesia, and the session lasts about 20 minutes.
When should I get treated before summer?
Two to four weeks before you need the effect, since full dryness takes up to two weeks.
